Narrative in film posters

Updated: Jun 15, 2022

What is enigma code

Enigma codes are the “revelation of truth”. The producer of the film will deliberately create a plot point that raises questions and teases the audience so we continue to watch on to resolve the mystery. This is used in film posters as well to make viewers interested and make them want to go watch the film.

Binary opposition

Levi Strauss' binary opposition theory identifies how within media texts, most commonly films, there is a binary opposite between two characters or forces. This is shown obviously within comics where there is a struggle for the good to win against evil.

Levi Strauss, a French anthropologist in the 1900s, proposed a theory of 'binary opposites' which entails that the majority of narratives in media contain opposing main characters. These binary opposites help to thicken the plot and further the narrative; and introduce contrast.

Enigma Code:

Why is he walking into the 6 and who is it? This question adds mystery and creates a puzzle for the audience to figure out by watching the film.

Binary Opposition:

The two colours are a yellow and orange mix and black. These represent darkness and light.

Action code:

The characters in the poster are holding guns and are in poses which suggest they are ready for action.

Binary opposition:

There are two sets of people which are separated on different sides of the poster. One of the sides is lighter than the other to visualise good and bad.

Enigma code:

Why is he pointing a gun at the man? This adds a mystery to the film.
